The leather-covered knob that Subaru is selling STILL looks and feels virtually the same as the OEM shifter, in MY opinion. Here's what I would recommend if you would really like one: Find someone in your area like me who already bought a leather-covered shifter, and ask them for their OEM shift knob! Then, find a creative person to wrap or cover it yourself! Seriously, it's PRETTY COOL, but it's NOT worth what they're charging for it. I didn't want anyone who was interested in this upgrade to pass it by thinking you had to get into the center console or under the car. Mostly I think because the old one is supported and not loose in your hands. One note, The trim was a little harder for me to get off the new knob than the old one. Just a heads up, the shaft has some light vasoline like grease on it so don't lay it on the seats. Lift the knob straight up, the shaft and knob are out. Just push straight towards the cubby and the clip will pop off and land in the cubby. If you put your thumb and index finger tip together like you were going to pinch the shift shaft you will feel the ends of the clip poking your fingers. Next is to remove the retaining clip that is exposed by trim removal. I used my thumbnails on the raised "tab" on both sides of the trim. The same as are already on the car.įirst off is removing the chrome trim by sliding it straight down. But then I thought maybe someone might not try thinking there was more involved. Just don't get it dirty.At first I thought this is so simple that it's not worth reporting on. The shifter rod is coated with grease so set it on a piece of paper or something. This gives access to the metal clip that holds the knob in place. Use the small flat head screwdriver to pry down the lower cover of the shifter knob. This process is easier with the parking brake engaged, this way the angle of the lever helps out.įirst thing you need to do is remove the shifter knob. If the lights aren't important to you, no need to swap harnesses.) The wire harness w/boot shares the same part number as the harness w/o boot, so who knows if it works and I'm not going to be mad if it doesn't. Probably has to do with the fact that the letters light up individually on the new shift indicator. The wire that connects to the bottom of the shift indicator has a different connector, and different wires, so I have that wire harness coming. They came in today and within 10 minutes of getting home from work everything was disassembled. Ordered the shift indicator (which is the name of the trim piece) and the boot. The actual base with the switches and cupholders is the same part in both the Premium and Limited, so common sense told me the swap would be possible. I really liked the shift trim and boot in the Limited model so I was looking up part numbers to see if it would be a simple swap. As I mentioned in my new member introduction, this was something I was waiting on parts for. ![]()
